For those of us who enjoy adult beverages it can be a lot of fun to be In Persuit Of The Best Mai Tai On Maui! Mai Tai’s conjure up thoughts of grass shack tiki bars, drinking out of tiki glasses with tropical fruit on swizzle sticks and of course an umbrella, and trust me, those kitschy style Mai Tais exist but my favorite Mai Tai has grown up a little and offers a little island-style tweak!
This ubiquitous island drink’s name has it’s roots in Polynesian culture. “Maita’i ” is the Tahitian word for “good“.
According to Wikipedia; “Victor J. Bergeron claimed to have invented the Mai Tai in 1944 at his restaurant, Trader Vic’s, in Oakland, California.[3] Trader Vic’s rival, Don the Beachcomber, claimed to have created it in 1933 at his then-new bar named for himself (later a famous restaurant) in Hollywood. Don the Beachcomber’s recipe is more complex than that of Vic’s and tastes quite different.[4]
The Trader Vic’s story of its invention is that the Trader (Victor J. Bergeron) created it one afternoon for some friends who were visiting from Tahiti. One of those friends, Carrie Guild, tasted it and cried out: “Maita’i roa ae!” (literally “very good!”, figuratively “Out of this world! The best!”)—hence the name
Most current recipes for Mai Tais based on Trader Vic’s 1944 recipe include rum, lime juice, orgeat syrup, and orange liqueur (typically orange curaçao). Variants may include orange and grapefruit juices, bitters, grenadine, falernum, and so on. Various books from Victor Bergeron described using rum from Jamaica as well as from Martinique, which in modern usage is a Rhum Agricole.”.
Regardless of which side of the drink debate you fall on, I think we can all agree that this magical rum concoction is a truly delightful, island adult beverage and one that you must try so that your Maui vacation is complete.
I’ll cut straight to the point and let you know that my very favorite Mai Tai can be found at Monkeypod Kitchen. But don’t let that stop you from trying one at all of the restaurants and bars you visit so that you can come to your own conclusion.
Monkeypod’s Mai Tai follows the traditional route but with a little twist, the secret, well not so secret, ingredient is in the house-made liliko‘i syrup made into a foam that tops the drink.
From Maui Magazine; “Jason Vendrell, beverage director/sommelier at Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea, says, “When we were opening the restaurant, I wanted to do a more classic mai tai, with just one small variation. I was going to incorporate a house-made liliko‘i [passionfruit] syrup, and Chandra Lam [talented mixologist from Southern Wine & Spirits] suggested we make a foam. I think the reason the Monkeypod Mai Tai is so popular is because it is well balanced and refreshingly tart. We also use the best possible ingredients.”
And popular it is! According to one of Monkeypod’s Instagram posts in January “Monkeypod kitchen Wailea sold 115,000 Mai tai’s this year.” That’s a whole lot of cocktails my friends, they must be doing something right!
Monkeypod Garlic Fries and House Special Mai Tai!
Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself! Monkeypod Wailea is just a few minutes drive from our condo and trust me, they have fantastic Happy Hours from 3p–5:30p & 9p–11p (50% off appetizers).
Maybe you’re reading this from the Mainland? No worries, here’s the recipe for you to try at home. Reproducing the ‘liliko’i’ foam may be a bit of a challenge but home mixologist probably love a good cocktail challenge.
Monkeypod Mai Tai Recipe

1/2 oz. honey 1 oz. liliko‘i purée 1 oz. simple syrup 1 oz. egg whites 1.5 oz. cold water

Some of Maui’s best ‘grinds’ (food) are offered up from Food Trucks. We’ve put together this ‘Essential Guide To Food Trucks Of South Maui‘ as a jumping off point for what’s sure to be an ever growing list of hidden gems that are sprouting up around South Maui (North Kihei to South Wailea) and Island wide.
There’s no arguing that Maui is one of Hawaii’s top gastronomic destinations with it’s fusion of Island-Asian style blended with traditional Polynesian and sprinkled with European influence. The top end restaurants though wonderful and decadent come with a hefty price tag. Maui’s local food trucks offer up amazing, mouth watering, local style dishes aimed at the average to budget traveler and local alike.
Get ready to thrill your taste buds with these local style grinds!
Kina’ole Grill
Let’s start with Kina’ole Grill Food Truck. Kina’ole Grill appeals right away with their beautiful turquoise truck painted with a lei-making beauty and an outrigger-canoeing guy. But though their truck is eye-catching, it’s what’s being served from the widow on the other side that has locals and tourists talking. Sample menu items range from fresh grilled Ahi to Chicken Katsu. The Crispy Calamari is a big hit with it’s Dynamite Sauce as is the Coconut Shrimp! How do Pulled Pork Sliders with delicious Guava BBQ Sauce sound?
Kina’ole Grill Food Truck can be found just across from Kamaole I beach (Bonus! It’s walking distance from our condo!) in South Kihei.
Address – Corner of S. Kihei Road and Alanui Kealili Dr, Kihei, HI 96753
Aloha Thai Fusion
Maybe you’ve had grilled Ahi and Mahi Mahi a few days in a row and are looking for something delish but just a little different. Then no problem because parked right next to Kina’ole is Aloha Thai Fusion Food Truck (and catering)!
Why not try some Hand Rolled Spring rolls all vegetarian with fresh herbs, or Maui’s voted Number One Pad Thai Chicken or Shrimp? Can’t go wrong with their Fresh Grilled Fish Tacos made with stone ground tortillas and pineapple coleslaw w/cilantro lime mango crème fraiche!
Address – Corner of S. Kihei Road and Alanui Kealili Dr, Kihei, HI 96753 (Use map above)
Big Beach BBQ
Now Big Beach BBQ has a big local following as they’ve been serving up BBQ delights on island for some time now. They had a regular spot at the Maui Brewing Co but just announced their new location at the Kukui Mall. Their motto – “Pork & Pelagics is what we do.” – keeping it simple.
The meat is smoked in Kiawe and the fish is caught locally, offering you a genuine taste of the islands that’ll keep you coming back for more. Vacation over? No problem, they sell their BBQ Sauce and Hot Sauce so you can take some of the islands home with you.
Menu items range from Pulled Pork Tacos to a side of Mac Salad (it’s a ‘thing ‘ in Hawaii) to the Pine Dog (pineapple infused pork link).
They constantly move between their locations in Makena (Big Beach), and Kukui Mall. But, they don’t move at random, so if you’re ever curious about where they’ll be and when, just go to any of their social media pages or head over to their website to check out their schedule!
Address – Varies but their Kukui Mall location is; 1819 S Kihei Rd, Kihei, HI 96753
Jawz Fish Tacos
If you’re headed out to Makena Beach (aka Big Beach) or any beach in that vicinity then no need to pack a lunch, just head over to Jawz Fish Tacos. It’s oh so much more than just fish tacos. For a food truck, they offer a nice variety on their menu. Everything from (of course) Fish Tacos to Shave Ice (again, in Hawaii it’s a ‘thing’). Maybe you forgot your water bottle and you’re mouth is full of salt water from body surfing at Big Beach, no problem – Jawz has you covered.
Prices – $4-12 BRING CASH, it’s a little isolated out at Makena.
Location – Makena Beach Parking lot #1
Horhito’s Mobile Taqueria
I’m sensing a theme here for South Maui Food Trucks – Tacos! Next up on our list is Horhito’s Mobile Taqueria.
Open daily from 10am-9pm, specializing in Mexican Cuisine, Horhitos was voted Maui’s Best Food Truck in MauiTimes Best of Maui Issue. The shrimp ($3) and fish (ono or mahi, $4) tacos come on flour tortillas with shredded lettuce, cheese, chipotle mayo and pico de gallo. The steak, al pastor and smoked roast pork tacos ($2) are served on corn tortillas and topped with onions and cilantro. The menu also includes breakfast burritos and wraps, Hawaiian plates, quesadilla, burritos and hot dogs.
One of my all time favorites that I stumbled upon by chance when they were first starting out is South Maui Fish Company. Give their poke bowl a try, it’s amazing!
From their website; “At South Maui Fish Company we take great pride in offering you the freshest quality of fish. Daily catch coupled, with much of our menu being locally sourced produce and as many sustainable ingredients as possible. We want our customers to have a great meal while having the least amount of impact on our environment.”
Hours – Monday – Saturday 11:00a.m. – 8:30 p.m (Open until they sell out, which does happen)
Prices – $3-26
Address – 22 Alahele pl. Kihei, HI, 96753 (Behind the Union 76 station on S Kihei Rd)
Outrigger Pizza
A departure from the food trucks above is Outrigger Pizza. Offering up pizza delights such as White Cheddar Mushroom and Chicken Bacon Ranch! You’ll also find other amazing pizza flavors from this mobile eatery such as Pesto Pie and Spinach Delight. Maui’s first wood-fired pizza food truck, the chef/owner uses Kiawe wood in the over and hand makes each pie while you wait! Check them out at the Kukui Mall. Psst… Kiawe is a lesser known species of Mesquite.
Location – Kukui Mall 1819 S Kihei Rd, Kihei HI 96753 (see Big Beach BBQ above)
Kihei Station Food Trucks Court
Recently, a little-used parking area behind the mauka (mountain side) Azeka Shopping Center has been converted into a food court of food trucks. From their website “Kihei Station Food Truck / Trailer Pod is a culinary carnival with a rotating lineup of culinary curiosities that are sure to amaze, delight and astound.”
There are shade structures, games and plenty of trucks to choose from.
Here’s a list of some of the food trucks rotating in/out at Kihei Station with about 5 or 6 in residence at any given time.
Teddy’s Burgers – Authentic home-style burgers, thick shakes and all the traditional sides.
Just Put In – Serving up the French-Canadian delicacy known as Poutine (French Fries topped with cheese curds and brown sauce/gravy)

Kohola Brewery Lahaina Pouring Their Heart Into Craft Brew
Kohola Brewery Lahaina. Last week we visited Maui Brewing Co for a look at what’s on tap in South Maui – today we’ll see what’s brewing up on the West side in Lahaina.
Kohola Brewery was born of the dreams of two couples, William and Susan Ramirez and Ian and Christine Elumba of Southern California. Home brewers taking their dreams to a new level!
The brewery was purchased from the former owners, Maui Brewing Co. after they expanded into South Maui. The fit was perfect! After much remodeling and reconfiguring of equipment to meet their unique needs, the brewery opened their doors to the thirsty in December of 2016.
From Kohola’s web site;
Kohola Brewery is a local, independent craft brewery located in the heart of Lahaina, Maui. We believe that good beer makes everything else better. Beer is one of those special things in life that brings people together. We pour our hearts and passion into a pint and share our craft to those who enjoy our extraordinary brews. We are your local brewery. We are Lahaina-brewed.
Kohola beers are now served in 80 draft handles in 50 bars, restaurants and resorts on Maui, as well as several places in Oahu and Kauai.
All of our Beers are brewed and packaged locally here in Lahaina, Maui. Flights of 4, 6 and 8 are available. Happy Hour is 4-9PM Daily
For the uninitiated, Kohola means Whale in the Hawaiian language and is represented in their unique and simple logo.
Year Round Beers
Let’s take a look at what’s on tap! Year Round Beers-
Talk Story Pale Ale – American, 5.1% ABV, A smooth, grainy, and slightly bready, classic Pale Ale. This flavor matches beautifully with the citrus, tangerine flavors and aromas of Chinook, Mosaic, Mandarina Bavaria and Citra hops. Locals in Hawaii love to chat — or what we say talk story. This is what this beer truly represents, good times with friends and Ohana. Malt: 2-Row, Vienna Hops: Citra, Chinook, Mandarina Bavaria, Mosaic Yeast: House Ale.
Lokahi Pilsner Pilsner – German, 5.5% ABV, Our best-selling beer, a German Style Pilsner, presents a slightly grainy, pilsner malt sweetness to the nose and mouth. Its crisp hop bitterness from Tettnang hops is accentuated by a moderate sulfate rich water profile, this pale-yellow lager is conditioned for 6-8 weeks to give it a perfect flavor and aroma profile to compliment the beautiful island of Maui! Lokahi is the Hawaiian word for “in unity, harmony, and peace”. Malt: Pilsner Hops: Tettnang, Hallertau Magnum Yeast: Bohemian Lager.
Red Sand Red Ale – American Amber / Red, 5.5% ABV, Red Sand Ale is an American-style Red Ale that is medium bodied with bready, malty flavors and aromas. It has hop aromas of earth and spice from the late kettle Fuggle additions. This beer is named after the “pocket” Red Sand beach in Maui. As red ales are not common to the islands of Hawaii, this is truly a “pocket” style in paradise. Malt: 2-Row, CaraAmber, Crystal 60, Black, Vienna Hops: CTZ (Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus), UK Fuggle Yeast: House Ale
The brewery has a good sized handful of Limited Release beer on tap as well, all with monikers as unique as their flavor profiles; Shaka Island (IPA), Pineapple Lokahi (Pilsner), Lilikoi Saison (Lilikoi = Passionfruit), Mean Bean Coffee Stout, Mr. Ukulele (IPA), Hop Aloha (IPA), Sweet Home Lahaina (Belgian Tripel) and Coconut Hula Stout!
At the moment the brewery isn’t offering up food but Ono Tacos is their neighbor and Kohola encourages folks to grab a bite at the food truck (well really food trailer) and carry it on over. Kohola offers fun games such as cards, Jenga, GIANT Jenga and more as well as complementary WIFI, and kamaaina specials for residents.

Forget about the salad bars of the past, take a look at what three local chefs are cooking up (or rather not a whole lot of cooking) at their newest healthy-eating restaurant in Kihei. Fork & Salad Serving Up Healthy Meals!! With an incredibly diverse menu and ingredients sourced locally these boys have hit a home run. Sandwiches, Wraps, Soup and Salad are the main fare at this north Kihei hot spot.
Building your own salad is a 3 step process.
First, pick your salad base of kale, arugula, spring mix, spinach, romaine (or other seasonal greens as available)
Second, pick your favorite dressing from the following
cilantro-smoked chili miso-ginger roasted shallot balsamic green goddess meyer lemon-herb creamy ranch blue cheese classic caesar l ilikoi-mango thai lemongrass avocado-lime
OR BASICS olive oil squeeze of lemon & oil balsamic vinegar red wine vinegar
Third, pick 5 ingredients from ‘Build Your Own’ salad ingredients list
apples avocado bacon beets raw beets roasted spicy broccoli carrots chickpeas cilantro and mint corn raw crimini mushroom croutons
cucumber curry golden raisins dried cranberries boiled eggs fried garlic chips fresh hearts of palm green papaya kabocha squash kalamata olives kim chee banana peppers local sprouts papaya
pineapple purple sweet potato purple cabbage red bell pepper red onion radish roasted eggplant brussel sprouts strawberry tomato watermelon
CHEESE, NUTS, SEEDS, & GRAINS blue cheese cheddar shredded feta goat cheese parmesan slivered almonds cashews quinoa health grain mix buckwheat noodle wasabi pea
And Viola! Healthy eating at it’s finest.
As visitors in search of healthy eating and locally sourced foods, we think this one is a real hit. The infinite number of combinations would be cost prohibitive if you were to try and purchase all of them individually and chances are you couldn’t eat what you’ve bought before your departure. This is a great option to get a very diverse salad or sandwich without breaking the bank.
Of course there are also order off the menu salads as well, both options will run you less than $10 and sandwiches slightly more.
Fresh soups are offered as well as healthy grain bowls.

We’ve put together The Ultimate Maui Farmers Market Guide. Your island guide and a map of Maui Farmers Markets to help you find the freshest, locally grown fruits and vegetables while visiting Maui.
Knowing how to shop like a local will enable you to cook the best island fresh meals made from locally grown and organic produce. And you’ll be supporting the local community and eating the freshest island grown ingredients! Maui is blessed with a year round growing climate and though some fruits and veggies do have seasons, you’ll always find something unique and exciting to try!
One of the reasons our guests stay at a fully equipped condo is to enjoy a few meals in. Our condo is just steps to the two gas BBQ grills available and we’ve just installed a brand new 5-burner gas cooking range and offer every imaginable kitchen gadget to prepare your island style meals.
All Farmers Markets are also listed on our Maui Events Calendar should you wish to see Farmers Markets listed by a particular day of the week.
Located on the north side of Kihei near Sugar Beach. This is an ongoing market open most days and serving up lots of local style fresh produce, baked items, hummus, cheese and more. Most days you can buy a cold, fresh coconut, opened with a machete to order and sip right out of a straw! Best stuff ever! One item not to miss from this and the Lahaina sister farmers market is the Lilikoi Cream Cheese. Lilikoi is passion fruit and supposedly this is the best on the island. Try it on a bagel, fresh banana bread or homemade French Toast!
While you won’t find everything you might find at another Farmers Market, you will find the most diverse selection of fruit at Yee’s Orchard. Yee’s has been selling and growing their own varieties of fruit for over 60 years. Their mango selection can’t be beat! They get my vote for most delicious!
The center courtyard of this central Maui mall is transformed into a local-style farmers market three days a week. You’ll find an array of locally grown fruits and veggies as well as other farmers market fare.

From their website they offer the following description; “Packed with energy and freshness – Hale Ku’ai is a training program that prepares members for employment in the retail of food items and produce. Most of the produce is marketed on the day it is delivered; and priced to be affordable to those who would not normally purchase fresh produce. The Open Market is intended to promote wellness. Come check us out…there is something for everyone.”

The Country Store offers a bounty of fruits and vegetable to the participants, staff, and the local community.”
