Save Money On Your Next Vacation -The Importance Of #BookDirect

Save Money On Your Next Vacation #BookDirect
Save Money On Your Next Vacation #BookDirect

Save Money On Your Next Vacation. Today Is Guest Education Day where we share The Importance Of #BookDirect!

February 7, 2018 marked the first Vacation Rental Industry-wide campaign to bring awareness to our guests and guests of ALL worldwide vacation rentals by owners. The industry has chosen a simple hashtag to represent what it means to work directly with owners of Vacation Rentals – #BookDirect.

February 5, 2020 – UPDATE!  #BookDirect is working. Our guests are saving hundreds of dollars by booking directly with us, the vacation rental owner, an not using booking sites that charge fees!

For many years Online Travel Agencies (OTA) and online booking sites have been charging guests ‘convenience’ or ‘booking’ fees with little to no added value in the way of products or services. It’s simply a way to line the pockets of corporations with your hard earned dollars.

There was a time (before Expedia paid 4 BILLION dollars to acquire it) when VRBO.com was the vacation rental industry leader. In the beginning, VRBO was a simple plan really that became immensely successful.  Create a website where owners can pay a subscription fee to list their vacation rental. Guests pay nothing, but sign up to find rentals in the destination of their vacation, a matchmaking service if you will. But four billion dollars of stockholder money needs to be repaid and Expedia is doing that on the backs of vacationers like you and me. The booking fees are created using a mysterious algorithm and can range from 7 to 18%.  Vacation Rental owners do not collect this fee. Needles to say, we don’t list or advertise with VRBO (or any site that collects fees from guests.)

Guest Education Day #BookDirect

At Kihei Hale O Maluhia, we NEVER charge booking fees and NEVER list or advertise with websites that do either.  We think guests would agree that they’re looking for the best travel deals and want to spend hard earned money on activities, eating out or shopping. Not paying fees.

So today we ask that you share with your friends the hashtag #BookDirect. Help spread the word that the true value in travel lies with working directly with owners. After all, who knows our condo better than us? Certainly not an agent in a call center half-way around the world.

Guest Education Day #BookDirect

Benefits of #BookDirect

Book direct and save: Did you know that it’s not just VRBO that charges these outrageous fees. Airbnb, HomeAway and TripAdvisor also add hundreds of dollars of fees to your booking total?

When you book direct, you have direct contact with the manager or owner: When booking a vacation rental, peace of mind is important. Want to know if there is a grill, a kayak, 24/7 service, a grocery store close by? When you book direct, you can find out many of these important questions and more before you commit to booking.

The best price isn’t on the OTAs: Unlike hotels, OTAs and aggregators (like Airbnb, Expedia, Booking.com, VRBO.com, HomeAway, TripAdvisor, and FlipKey) don’t have the best price for travelers. In fact, you can save hundreds by booking direct and booking local.

Many of the best vacation rentals aren’t event listed on the major sites: Because of the cost of using the big sites, the best vacation homes with the highest demand cannot be found on the big websites. For example along North Carolina’s beaches, alone, only 30 percent of the homes for rent can be found on the big websites. By limiting your search to the aggregating websites, you might be missing out on the best vacation home for your family or group.

Mangers and owners have intimate knowledge about the destination: They can direct you the best rental for your needs and send you to the best activities, restaurants, and area service providers.

If you have special needs, a manager or homeowner can help: Looking for help with your family’s special needs or are you celebrating a special event like an anniversary or birthday? An owner or manager can work with you directly to help with any of your individual needs and give you these assurances before you commit to a booking.

During non-peak travel times, managers and owners have special offers available: From events and activities to special rates to onsite services, with direct communication with managers and owners, you get insider knowledge and the best offers.

The Evolution Is NOW

The travel industry is evolving to meet the needs of travelers and we recognize that and are evolving too. Destination marketing is really a key to survival for owners in a sea of rentals that are popping up.  We’ve partnered with www.VacationSoup.com a breakout leader in the travel industry.  The approach is simple, Owner contributed travel content driving travelers to destinations. As vacation rental owners, we know our destination better than the OTA’s and we love to share this insider information with our guests. We want our guests to have access to the latest and greatest things to do, places to see, activities to try and we post about it regularly. All of our blog posts are share with Vacation Soup, we’re part of the ‘ingredients’ that make it so immensely successful.

A few weeks ago we wrote a post ‘Best Money Saving Travel Tip‘ about saving money by booking direct. Essentially we were just ahead of this industry wide campaign to bring awareness to travelers looking to save money.

Travel Outside Of Maui

We know that our guests travel to places other than Maui and we’d like to share a few of the listing sites we’ve partnered with that DO NOT charge booking fees and allow direct contact with owners, saving you $$.

• TIP – When searching for a Vacation Rental, seek out regional listing sites!

Listing Sites with NO BOOKING FEES

www.VacationSoup.com

www.vacation.rentals/

www.vhrnetwork.com

www.homeescape.com

www.houfy.com/

Alternately, many vacation rental owners who are transitioning away from the big listing sites are still listed there but can be found by doing a simple Google search using the unit #, name of the vacation rental or looking the owner up on Facebook.

And finally, Facebook has seen an explosion in regional groups where owners and guests can chat about rentals available and things to see and do at the vacation destination. Simply search for groups using your desired destination as the keyword.

While we don’t advertise on this listing site, you can see that their parody really sums it up in a comical way.

Kohola Brewery Lahaina Pouring Their Heart Into Craft Brew

Kohola Brewery Lahaina
Kohola Brewery Lahaina Pouring Their Heart Into Craft Brew

Kohola Brewery Lahaina.  Last week we visited Maui Brewing Co for a look at what’s on tap in South Maui – today we’ll see what’s brewing up on the West side in Lahaina.

Kohola Brewery was born of the dreams of two couples, William and Susan Ramirez and Ian and Christine Elumba of Southern California. Home brewers taking their dreams to a new level!

The brewery was purchased from the former owners, Maui Brewing Co. after they expanded into South Maui. The fit was perfect!  After much remodeling and reconfiguring of equipment to meet their unique needs, the brewery opened their doors to the thirsty in December of 2016.

From Kohola’s web site;

Kohola Brewery is a local, independent craft brewery located in the heart of Lahaina, Maui. We believe that good beer makes everything else better. Beer is one of those special things in life that brings people together. We pour our hearts and passion into a pint and share our craft to those who enjoy our extraordinary brews.  We are your local brewery. We are Lahaina-brewed.

Kohola beers are now served in 80 draft handles in 50 bars, restaurants and resorts on Maui, as well as several places in Oahu and Kauai.

All of our Beers are brewed and packaged locally here in Lahaina, Maui. Flights of 4, 6 and 8 are available. Happy Hour is 4-9PM Daily

For the uninitiated, Kohola means Whale in the Hawaiian language and is represented in their unique and simple logo.

Year Round Beers

Kohola Brewery Lahaina

Kohola Brewery Lahaina

Let’s take a look at what’s on tap!   Year Round Beers-

Talk Story Pale Ale – American, 5.1% ABV, A smooth, grainy, and slightly bready, classic Pale Ale. This flavor matches beautifully with the citrus, tangerine flavors and aromas of Chinook, Mosaic, Mandarina Bavaria and Citra hops. Locals in Hawaii love to chat — or what we say talk story. This is what this beer truly represents, good times with friends and Ohana. Malt: 2-Row, Vienna Hops: Citra, Chinook, Mandarina Bavaria, Mosaic Yeast: House Ale.

Lokahi Pilsner Pilsner – German, 5.5% ABV, Our best-selling beer, a German Style Pilsner, presents a slightly grainy, pilsner malt sweetness to the nose and mouth. Its crisp hop bitterness from Tettnang hops is accentuated by a moderate sulfate rich water profile, this pale-yellow lager is conditioned for 6-8 weeks to give it a perfect flavor and aroma profile to compliment the beautiful island of Maui! Lokahi is the Hawaiian word for “in unity, harmony, and peace”. Malt: Pilsner Hops: Tettnang, Hallertau Magnum Yeast: Bohemian Lager.

Red Sand Red Ale – American Amber / Red, 5.5% ABV, Red Sand Ale is an American-style Red Ale that is medium bodied with bready, malty flavors and aromas. It has hop aromas of earth and spice from the late kettle Fuggle additions. This beer is named after the “pocket” Red Sand beach in Maui. As red ales are not common to the islands of Hawaii, this is truly a “pocket” style in paradise. Malt: 2-Row, CaraAmber, Crystal 60, Black, Vienna Hops: CTZ (Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus), UK Fuggle Yeast: House Ale

Kohola Brewery Lahaina

The brewery has a good sized handful of Limited Release beer on tap as well, all with monikers as unique as their flavor profiles;  Shaka Island (IPA), Pineapple Lokahi  (Pilsner), Lilikoi Saison (Lilikoi = Passionfruit), Mean Bean Coffee Stout, Mr. Ukulele (IPA), Hop Aloha (IPA), Sweet Home Lahaina (Belgian Tripel) and Coconut Hula Stout!
Kohola Brewery Lahaina

At the moment the brewery isn’t offering up food but Ono Tacos is their neighbor and Kohola encourages folks to grab a bite at the food truck (well really food trailer) and carry it on over. Kohola offers fun games such as cards, Jenga, GIANT Jenga and more as well as complementary WIFI, and kamaaina specials for residents.

Fork & Salad Serving Up Fast Healthy Meals On Maui

Fork & Salad Serving Up Fast Healthy Meals On Maui
Fork & Salad Is All About Healthy Eating

Forget about the salad bars of the past, take a look at what three local chefs are cooking up (or rather not a whole lot of cooking) at their newest healthy-eating restaurant in Kihei. Fork & Salad Serving Up Healthy Meals!! With an incredibly diverse menu and ingredients sourced locally these boys have hit a home run. Sandwiches, Wraps, Soup and Salad are the main fare at this north Kihei hot spot.

Fork & Salad

Fork & Salad

As visitors in search of healthy eating and locally sourced foods, we think this one is a real hit. The infinite number of combinations would be cost prohibitive if you were to try and purchase all of them individually and chances are you couldn’t eat what you’ve bought before your departure. This is a great option to get a very diverse salad or sandwich without breaking the bank.

Of course there are also order off the menu salads as well, both options will run you less than $10 and sandwiches slightly more.

Fresh soups are offered as well as healthy grain bowls.

About Fork & Salad

A chef-inspired salad company! “Eat local. Eat healthy!”

Our Mission: to redefine the possibilities of farm-to-table cuisine – as healthy, quick, convenient and affordable, so it can be enjoyed every day by everyone. In doing so, we will effectively support local farmers, ranchers and fishermen, taking us one step closer to a sustainable, edible Maui.

We feature tasty chef-inspired salads, sandwiches, soups, stews, juices, organic coffee and more. We source as much of our produce locally and organically as possible. Every ingredient has an origin and every recipe is hand-crafted! Our diners will feel awesome eating healthy as they support our partner vendors!

Farm to Table 2.0

Founded by chef-owners Jaron Blosser, Cody Christopher and Travis Morrin in 2016, Fork & Salad is their second restaurant brain child, the first being Three’s Bar and Grill in Kihei, Maui. Best Money Saving Travel Tip

Best Money Saving Travel Tip
Best Money Saving Travel Tip

Are you dreaming of getting away?  Summer vacation is just around the corner and it’s time to start planning and booking your Maui Vacation!

Many don’t know this but most listing sites are now charging you huge BOOKING FEES or ‘Service Fees‘ when you book through their platform. AirBnB set the trend and it wasn’t long before VRBO (and the whole family of HomeAway websites), Trip Advisor and FlipKey followed suit. These corporations are happy to tack on an addition 12% to a whopping 20% just for the “convenience” of booking through their platform.

Imagine you’re paying the following;

Best Money Saving Travel Tip

With the big booking sites you could be paying a whopping $166 more or worse!

A colleague sent us this actual phone screenshot of a quote from TripAdvisor (not for our rental but another). Note the $500.00 TripAdvisor Fee plus a Booking Fee of $136.30.  The fees are more than the rental cost.  No, we’re not kidding!  Insane right?

Best Money Saving Travel Tip

The question is WHY?Best Money Saving Travel Tip

Imagine what you could spend this $166 on during your vacation.  How about a Whale Watching adventure? Or what about a fancy dinner for two at Mama’s Fish House? Maybe you want to rent Kayaks or go Deep Sea Fishing?

The big corporations would have you believe that you’re ‘safer’ booking with their ‘guarantee’. But what if there’s a problem with your accommodations? Is someone in a call center halfway around the world going to help you out? Will they be able to give you inside travel tips about Maui? We think not. Wouldn’t you rather speak to the owner directly, someone who intimately knows the property you’re renting and can actually help solve issues?  Yea, us too!

It’s Whale Season On Maui – Close Encounters

It's Whale Season On Maui Close Encounters
It’s Whale Season On Maui – Close Encounters!

The Humpback Whales are back for their annual pilgrimage to the shallow waters off the coast of Maui! Maui is lucky enough to host these incredible mammals from approximately November to May but with peak whale season happening in February.

Look what happens when the tables are turned and the whales come to see YOU!  Close Encounter of the most Magnificent Kind!

What an incredible encounter! BUT let’s all remember to respect the marine life of Hawaii and keep in mind that Federal Laws protect many species in the Hawaiian Islands (more info on that below.)

Interested in having a close encounter with a Humpback whale? Here’s a list of tour companies that we like.

Captain Steve’s

We’ve taken numerous tours with Captain Steve’s and are always impressed. Small Zodiac style boats, limited number of guests, intimate feel, knowledgeable staff. Book your trip early due to popularity and limited availability.

Pride Of Maui Tours

Another great option is Pride of Maui. Not better, not worse, just different and each of us has our taste in how we enjoy activities. With POM you will lfind larger boats, more people, more amenities, more child oriented (slide, more room to walk around boat), longer trip. Equally fun as the smaller boats of Captain Steve’s.

Laws and Information about Whale Protection

Pursuit and feeding of marine mammals is prohibited by Federal law.

• Remain at least 100 yards from humpback whales, and at least 50 yards from other marine mammals (dolphins, other whale species, and Hawaiian monk seals). Do not swim with wild spinner dolphins.

• Observe turtles from a distance.

• Bring binoculars along on viewing excursions to assure a good view from the recommended viewing distances.

• Do not attempt to touch, ride, or feed turtles.

• Limit your time observing an animal to 1/2 hour.

• Marine mammals and sea turtles should not be encircled or trapped between boats or shore.
If approached by a marine mammal or turtle while on a boat, put the engine in neutral and allow the animal to pass. Boat movement should be from the rear of the animal.

By being aware of the steps to responsible marine mammal and sea turtle viewing, you can help reduce the potential to inadvertently harm these animals or violate Federal or state law. Together, we can ensure marine wildlife viewing will be as rewarding as it is today for many generations to come.

Notify proper authorities if you encounter sick or stranded animals. Keep your distance; distressed wild animals can be dangerous and should only be handled by trained professionals.

Laws and Marine Mammal Viewing
All whales, dolphins and seals are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 (MMPA). Humpback whales, sperm whales, monk seals and sea turtles are further protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) and under Hawaii State Law. The National Marine Sanctuaries Act (NMSA) provides additional protections for humpback whales and their habitat.

Top 12 Ways To Save Money On Your Maui Vacation

Top 12 ways to save Money on your Maui Vacation

Traveling to Maui is a dream of many and no one wants to spend more on their vacation than they have to. That’s why we’ve put together our Top 12 Ways To Save Money On Your Maui Vacation. If you’ve dreamed of coming to Maui and you’re ready to pull the trigger then you’ll want to start here with these money saving tips!

1. Travel during low or shoulder seasons

Avoiding peak or high season can offer some real saving advantages. Aside from the bonus fact that the island will be less populated during low or shoulder season allowing you to avoid the crowds, the significant savings will really add up. Airline prices will be lower as well as accommodation rates. Our low season aka Summer Value Season starts in mid April and carries through the end of October, with our ‘shoulder’ or Fall season running November to mid December. Lots of time to plan within to save $$

2. Book a condo for your lodging

If you’re here on our website, then you’ve already discovered the advantage of booking a condo for your Maui vacation. The advantages of having a fully equipped condo is like having a home away from home – chock full of all the amenities you would expect in your own home. With our full kitchen you can cater your meal budget to eating in or dining out or any combination of the two. Depending on the location, condo rates can be vastly cheaper than resort rates. We strive to keep our rates low and yet offer all the comforts of your own home, just in Paradise! We offer free parking and because we’re within walking distance of just about every thing you could need you’ll save gas money on getting around.

3. Book direct

Middlemen always want their financial cut, vendors and suppliers have to increase their rates to cover these expenses. When you book direct you have the added satisfaction of saving middlemen fees. This can be true not only for condo rentals, but for local car rental or local activities. You’ll NEVER pay a booking or ‘convenience’ fee when you book direct with us.  Here’s an example of fees charged by vacation rental booking sites

booking ees by platform

Fellow vacation rental owner Dan O’Connor has written a great blog post on how to save money by avoiding booking fees that truly do not offer any added value to the renter.

4. Eat In

With a full kitchen outfitted with brand new top end appliances and every kitchen gadget we could think of there’s no need to eat out every meal. Shop the local grocery stores and prepare your own budget friendly meals. Attached to the house keys you’ll find our local grocery store discount cards. Present them at check-out at the grocery store for added local’s only savings. We offer a nice sized Igloo cooler so that you can pack your snacks and lunches for the day saving you money by not eating out.

5. Happy Hours

If you do want to eat out, take advantage of happy hour pricing. Most restaurants offer great deals during happy hour for both eats and drinks. For example, right next door at Fred’s Mexican Cafe Happy Hour Tuesday Taco deal along with an order of guacamole and chips is very filling. Plus their gigantic Margaritas are delish and for an added BONUS you can request a table on the patio and watch sunset. We’ve also had some amazing Mai Tai’s and pupus (appetizers) at Monkeypod Kitchen during their Happy Hour when they offer 1/2 off select drinks and appetizers/pizzas. Read more about Monkeypod’s Mai Tai’s here.

If you’re traveling on Maui, check out our post on the 7 Best Happy Hours In South Kihei

Monkeypod Kitchen Pizza

6. Groupon or LivingSocial

Leverage the discounts available from these two discount sites. Pay in advance for your activities or gear rental. You can also search online for discounts. Be sure to call vendors direct to make sure you’re getting the best deals.

7. Free activities

There’s truly no shortage of activities on Maui and many can be done for free or very low cost. When our son was young we loved Geocaching together. Who doesn’t love a treasure hunt! Maui has literally dozens of hidden Geocahces of all sizes. Membership is free and often you’ll only need your Smart Phone to find them.

geocache map mauiWhat a great way to discover the island doing a day of treasure hunting (as with all actives, please play it safe and respect private property and Maui’s ecology). Maui hosts a few wonderful museums as well. Discover all you can about Maui history and culture. Fancy hiking? There are wonderful hikes to discover in Maui from the southern lava fields near La Perouse Bay to the Iao Valley in the West Maui Mountains and every waterfall in between. A list of great hikes can be found in the Maui Guidebook as suggested in a previous post. Of course beach hopping is free and we provide as a courtesy to our guests, all the necessary gear for a day at the beach including snorkel sets, cooler, beach chairs, umbrella and more.

beach gear

8. Put your membership cards to work

If you’re a member of AAA, AARP, are a student or have a military ID, put your memberships to work and ask for discounts at venues that charge admission. Bring your National Park membership or Senior Pass with you and use it for Haleakala National Park.

9. Travel light

No need to pack a lot and pay for checked luggage. We offer an ensuite washer and dryer for your convenience so you’ll find that you can pack all you need in a carry-on. We’ll cover in a separate post how to pack for Maui but the general rule is that you’ll only ever wear half of what you bring, and ‘take twice as much money and half as much clothing’ is a popular tip given to Maui travelers.

10. Plan in advance

This may seem pretty obvious to most. As a former travel agent  I’ve found that many don’t know that there are savings to be had by buying your tickets 14 or 21 days in advance. With an island destination, savings can be had by even booking further out than that. Most of our guests plan months in advance. Booking too far out can cost more and booking too close in can also raise the price. There’s a ‘Goldilocks’ time frame that’s ‘Just Right’ and that leads to our next tip…

11. Sign up for Airline alerts

We’ve signed up to get fare alerts from Virgin (Alaska), Hawaiian Airlines and so on so that we know when they’re running their airfare specials. Signing up for alerts from flight tracking sites such as Skiplagged or Google flights can keep you in the loop of when fares are lower.

12. Car rental on a shoestring

A car isn’t absolutely necessary on Maui and clever and frugal travelers can get by with public transportation, however if you want to get around to more out-of-the-way spots on the island and you have a limited number of days, then a car is a must. Spending a little extra time making some phone calls or internet inquiries will save you some hard earned dollars. Try a few of the local car rental companies and check their prices. Our FAVORITE local car rental company is Kihei Rent A Car. Their value cannot be beat.  We’ve also heard good things about Maui Cruisers  and Maui Bio Beetle. Other options are Priceline, where you can name your lowest offer price and it might be accepted is the price is right. Pick the smallest car you can to accommodate your family. If you, your family and all of your luggage will fit in a small economy car then you’re sure to get better gas mileage. Gas is much more expensive in Maui than it is on the Mainland.

Splurge On What Matters Most To You, Skimp On The Rest. Make your bucket list and decide what things that you want to do and can afford to do. These are the things that you should splurge on. Plan a few indulgences and use the savings on the items above to allow you to splurge on your one or two big ticket or more memorable items while on Maui like a day at the spa, an upgrade to a convertible or Jeep or a fantastic golf package.

I spent may years packing a tent and camping gear to Maui and sleeping on the sand at Papalua Beach Campground because I was truly on a strict budget. I’m certainly dating myself as this was back in the days that you could still check two bags for free. One day I’ll write another post of our camping adventures on a true shoestring budget!
