Best Sushi Restaurant On Maui

Best Sushi Maui 1054Togoshi

Our pick for the best sushi restaurant on Maui, 1054Togoshi

We’re sushi fanatics. We’ve eaten sushi all over the world. We’re pretty darn picky when it comes to our sushi. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about our most recent discovery – Maui’s BEST sushi restaurant.

I’m hesitant to even let the (yoga) cat out of the bag (you’ll understand the ‘yoga‘ bit in just a moment.) I fear that once I click the publish button on this post that the -hard to get reservations- for this place will become even harder to get. But in the interest of spreading Aloha, I’m going to let you all in on our sushi secret.

No Sushi – No Life. Keep Calm & Eat Sushi!

I can’t remember how we found this place – probably Yelp or Google Maps, but it’s not in a place you’d expect to find (in our opinion) the very best sushi restaurant on Maui. The restaurant is located in a smaller strip mall off the main thoroughfare of South Kihei Road, on East Lipoa Street. None of this matters because this hidden gem will delight and you’ll believe you’ve been transported to a top Tokyo sushi restaurant decorated with a Jimmy Buffett-esque style beachy theme.

The owners clearly love the beach vibe the decor conveys and I must admit, that while it’s very busy, it does make this eatery feel less like a Japanese restaurant and more like a beach cabana! It’s fun, quirky, eclectic and very artistic, and I love it!

1054Togoshi is only open evenings and reservations are required. Seating is limited to about 9 at the sushi bar and there are only two tables (that I can tell) – one that seats four and the other up to 8. There are just the two owners, the sushi chef and his wife who is hostess, server and waitress.

This duo do a fantastic job! Warm Aloha is what you feel when you’re greeted at the door. Upon being seated you’re served water and given a hot, moist wash cloth to wash your hands with. That one feature places this restaurant high up on my authenticity scale. I absolutely love when Japanese restaurants provide this simple yet important and thoughtful touch.

The menu is perfectly adequate in it’s offerings but don’t expect to find off the wall rolls dripping in aioli sauces with crazy names like Mucho-Macho Roll or Batman Roll. Nope, here you’ll find a few of the ubiquitous rolls such as ‘Rainbow‘ and ‘Spicy Tuna‘ but the real gems on the menu are the Sashimi, Nigiri, the items on the Pupu list and appetizers.

Place your food order directly with the chef and be patient. This truly authentic sushi arrives only as quickly as the chef can prepare it and depending on the time of evening – how busy the restaurant is. Trust me, every bite will be worth any wait you might incur.

Menu!

Speaking of the menu, the rest of the menu offers Sake (listed considerately in order of dryness), Japanese beer, Wine, *Shōchū, Japanese Whisky, softdrinks and of course prepared ‘just right’ macha green tea.

*Shōchū is a Japanese distilled beverage less than 45% alcohol by volume. It is typically distilled from rice (kome), barley (mugi), sweet potatoes (satsuma-imo), buckwheat (soba), or brown sugar (kokutō), though it is sometimes produced from other ingredients such as chestnut, sesame seeds, potatoes or even carrots.Typically shōchū contains 25% alcohol by volume,[1] which is weaker than whisky or standard-strength vodka but stronger than wine and sake.

We tried the Takeno Tsuyu sake first – it’s delicious, unfiltered and very much on the sweeter side. Our second sake was the Tamano Hikari, much dryer and clear, crisp and smooth. I recommend both BUT not in the order that we tried them.

What we ordered!

Before this becomes the longest restaurant review in history, lets get down to business shall we. What we ordered!

We started off with the Yellowtail Carpacio with garlic, jalepeño, local greens, Yuzu soy and olive oil.

Next was traditional nigiri. But it was anything but run of the mill. The fish was as tender and flavorful as I’ve ever had and the sushi rice, perfectly formed was quite literally the best I’ve ever had. It was slightly warm, seasoned to perfection and just the right texture. Magnificent. I could have just eaten an entire bowl of just sushi rice! I also must say, that it is better than any I had in Japan.

My companion opted for the Rainbow Roll and for a standard roll, it did not disappoint.

I went back for more nigiri. Oh my!! Big pluses for me are the ginger, which doesn’t contain food dyes and the GENUINE wasabi the chef uses. More points in my book! All in all I tried the Hamachi, Kanpachi, Yellowtail and one other on the special menu that I don’t recall the name. Be sure to try something from the ‘Special’ menu!!

This is the 12 piece Sushi “A’ combination. Which my other companion had and said was amazing. It was so amazing that we didn’t get a photo of it before it disappeared. Photo by Wayde T. via Yelp.

And finally I opted for a spicy Hamachi roll. Decadent!

The Nuts & Bolts

We found the prices on par with the other sushi restaurants on the island (except for Morimoto Maui which is very expensive, though delightful but we left very hungry!). The portions were slightly on the smaller side but you are getting extremely high quality fish and the price reflects that.

The service is on par with what you’d expect for just two people working and doing it all. Some reviews online complain about this but I’m a ‘go with the flow’ type and it never bothered me as I didn’t find the service to be slow. In fact, the service we got was great, super friendly, we didn’t wait too long, and were generally very satisfied. This restaurant is clearly a labor of love for the owners and if you’re patient and adopt a ‘Maui Time’ mentality (I recommend that for ALL things on the island) you will greatly enjoy yourselves.

Reservations are a must! Fortunately we got in on the same day for our first visit (and yes, there was a second visit in the same week, it was that good)

Note that LAST CALL (for both food and beverages) is at 8:30 and they mean it. Though they did bend it a bit for a 2nd glass of Sake for us.

Overall, both of my dining experiences were great. The food was great and the prices what I’d expect for the quality.

Bottom line, WE LOVED IT!

So what’s the deal with the Yoga Cat?

My seat featured a very nice book entitled ‘Yoga With Cats’ which is hilarious, and propping it up is the cat, in (I believe) the forward fold position! Such a hoot!

Good Morning Maui!!  You’re here finally and are up with the birds. Time for a yummy breakfast but not sure where to go for the best island breakfast?  We’ve got you covered in our breakfast guide with 5 places to grab a great breakfast in Kihei.

Does the sound of banana macadamia nut pancakes make your tummy grumble? How about a bowl of fresh fruit salad, island style?

image by Kihei Caffe – Instagram

Let’s start with a quick and light breakfast version for those on the go or in search of a healthy start to their day –

Quick, Healthy & Light

Brekkie Bowls

Images via Brekkie Bowls Instagram

Located in a non-descript light industrial park near two fitness centers, Brekkie Bowls food truck serves up  healthy Açaí or Pitaya (dragon fruit) bowls to locals and visitors ‘in the know’.  Here’s the inside dish, pick your base (Açaí or Pittaya), pick two fruit toppings, add some toppings like almond butter, chia seeds, hemp seeds or gogi berries and head to the beach to watch the day get started.  Don’t forget your kombucha, coffee or fresh smoothie!!  Brekkie Bowls are all organic, no added sugar and ono delicious.

What is Açaí you ask?  Açaí berries come from the Acai palm.  They’re small grape sized berries that pack a nutritional punch of antioxidants, beneficial fiber and heart-healthy fats. How about Pitaya? Pitaya, also known as dragon fruit is the fist sized fruit of the Cereus pitahaya plant that also boasts powerful nutritional benefits. Check our our post on visiting Maui’s only Dragon Fruit Farm!

Hearty or Healthy

Nalu’s South Shore Grill

Next up on our breakfast tour of Kihei is Nalu’s South Shore Grill.  Nalu’s is known for their fantastic night entertainment and dinners but they serve up a mean breakfast too! They serve up Loco Moco all day so those who want to really fuel up are all set! Not sure what Loco Moco is all about, check out our Ultimate Food Guide To Hawaiian Local Foods and read all about it.

Nalu’s also serves up Açaí and Pitaya bowls but you might want skip the bowls and give their signature pancakes served with a homemade rum syrup, Maui Gold pineapple, bananas, and mac nuts a try. Yum! Maybe add a side of Malasadas? eh?

It’s very casual here, order at the counter and seating is open.

Something For Everyone

Kihei Caffe

Next up is by far one of Kihei’s most popular breakfast spots and the line out the door is testimony to just how popular this beach cafe is.  Situated right on South Kihei Road, for years, Kihei Caffe has been dishing up delicious breakfasts to locals and visitors alike. If eating hearty breakfast while sitting outside and watching the world go by sounds good to you then this is the spot. Breakfast is served all day, no problem if you sleep in!

Remember those banana macadamia nut pancakes I mentioned earlier (you can get mac-nut French toast too)? Yep, you can get them here along with all of your traditional breakfast favorites and a few new local style dishes.

Tip – Get there early to avoid the line and to grab one of the outdoor seats. Also go early if Pecan Sticky Buns is your thing, they sell out early. Or grab your food to go and head to the beach across the street.

Hearty and Local

808 Grindz Cafe

photos by Annie-N, Tea-A and Robert E. via Yelp

This hidden gem is tucked back in the Safeway shopping mall. Famous for their Mac-Nilla sauce for their pancakes and waffles but they have just about everything under the breakfast sun as well. Casual atmosphere, order at the counter and all food is ‘to-go’ – you can take it to the beach, back to the condo or sit at their outside tables.  Since the weather in Maui is lovely most any time of the year, you can’t go wrong no matter where you choose to sit and eat.

You’ll find a lot of local-style influence in their menu (like Loco Moco, fried rice or Kalua pork hash).  How about trying the Kawabanga Breakfast with ubiquitous Spam on the side! Hows that for local-style!!

Where does 808 and Grindz come from?  808 is the local area code, and grindz is the local Pidgin term for food, good food.

808 Grindz Cafe

Hours: 7:00 am – 2:00 pm (breakfast and lunch all day)

Fancy Schmancy

Ka’ana Kitchen at the Andaz Hotel

Images by Andaz Maui via Instagram

Our number 5 pick goes all out. If you really want to treat yourself to an elegant breakfast at one of Maui’s premier fancy schmancy hotels then Ka’ana Kitchen is the place. The breakfast buffet will set you back roughly $50 per person (excluding gratuity) and for the buffet, it’s best if you arrive earlier rather than later, they seem to slow down stocking the breakfast bar around 10am. Breakfast can also be ordered off the menu, of course, and items such as Cinnamon Roll Pancakes with coconut creme, macadamia nuts and pineapple compote or Poached Eggs and Sweet Potato cake intrigue the palate.

Free Valet Parking can be validated at the restaurant.

The Essential Guide To Food Trucks Of South Maui

Guide To Food Trucks Of South Maui
The Essential Guide To Food Trucks Of South Maui

Some of Maui’s best ‘grinds’ (food) are offered up from Food Trucks.  We’ve put together this ‘Essential Guide To Food Trucks Of South Maui‘ as a jumping off point for what’s sure to be an ever growing list of hidden gems that are sprouting up around South Maui (North Kihei to South Wailea) and Island wide.

There’s no arguing that Maui is one of Hawaii’s top gastronomic destinations with it’s fusion of Island-Asian style blended with traditional Polynesian and sprinkled with European influence. The top end restaurants though wonderful and decadent come with a hefty price tag. Maui’s local food trucks offer up amazing, mouth watering, local style dishes aimed at the average to budget traveler and local alike.

Get ready to thrill your taste buds with these local style grinds!

Kina’ole Grill

Guide To Food Trucks Of South Maui

Let’s start with Kina’ole Grill Food Truck. Kina’ole Grill appeals right away with their beautiful turquoise truck painted with a lei-making beauty and an outrigger-canoeing guy. But though their truck is eye-catching, it’s what’s being served from the widow on the other side that has locals and tourists talking. Sample menu items range from fresh grilled Ahi to Chicken Katsu. The Crispy Calamari is a big hit with it’s Dynamite Sauce as is the Coconut Shrimp! How do Pulled Pork Sliders with delicious Guava BBQ Sauce sound?

Big Beach BBQ

Now Big Beach BBQ has a big local following as they’ve been serving up BBQ delights on island for some time now. They had a regular spot at the Maui Brewing Co but just announced their new location at the Kukui Mall.  Their motto – “Pork & Pelagics is what we do.” – keeping it simple.

Guide To Food Trucks Of South Maui

The meat is smoked in Kiawe and the fish is caught locally, offering you a genuine taste of the islands that’ll keep you coming back for more. Vacation over? No problem, they sell their BBQ Sauce and Hot Sauce so you can take some of the islands home with you.

Menu items range from Pulled Pork Tacos to a side of Mac Salad (it’s a ‘thing ‘ in Hawaii) to the Pine Dog (pineapple infused pork link).

They constantly move between their locations in Makena (Big Beach), and Kukui Mall.  But,  they don’t move at random, so if you’re ever curious about where they’ll be and when, just go to any of their social media pages or head over to their website to check out their schedule!

Jawz Fish Tacos

For a food truck, they offer a nice variety on their menu. Everything from (of course) Fish Tacos to Shave Ice (again, in Hawaii it’s a ‘thing’).  Maybe you forgot your water bottle and you’re mouth is full of salt water from body surfing at Big Beach, no problem – Jawz has you covered.

One of my all time favorites that I stumbled upon by chance when they were first starting out is South Maui Fish Company. Give their poke bowl a try, it’s amazing!

From their website; “At South Maui Fish Company we take great pride in offering you the freshest quality of fish.  Daily catch coupled, with much of our menu being locally sourced produce and as many sustainable ingredients as possible.  We want our customers to have a great meal while having the least amount of impact on our environment.”

As visitors in search of healthy eating and locally sourced foods, we think this one is a real hit. The infinite number of combinations would be cost prohibitive if you were to try and purchase all of them individually and chances are you couldn’t eat what you’ve bought before your departure. This is a great option to get a very diverse salad or sandwich without breaking the bank.

Of course there are also order off the menu salads as well, both options will run you less than $10 and sandwiches slightly more.

Fresh soups are offered as well as healthy grain bowls.

My Favorite Fish Tacos On Maui

My Favorite Fish Tacos On MauiCoconuts Fish Cafe serves up my favorite fish tacos on Maui.  Years ago they had just the one location but word is out and they’ve grown and expanded (they even have two locations here in California!) But the best news is that their second Kihei location is just a mere 3 minute walk from our condo -door to door! Can’t beat that.

We try to eat there at least twice during or time on island. Always yummy, huge portions (for light eating, the taco plate can be shared by two) and nice ice cold beer! (Kamaole location only).  Bonus, the Fish Tacos are gluten free which is fantastic for those of us with gluten issues.

Prices are reasonable with the fish tacos at $12.75 (at the time of this posting) and all other entrees under $18.00. This place won’t break the budget. Great for family dining.

We like to watch the sunset on the beach wall across the street and then amble over to Coconut’s for dinner. Easy peasy!

Tacos

So what’s so great?  The Ingredients!   Ingredients melded together to create complex flavors and couple that with 7 different layers of textures, including both freshly cut and perfectly grilled Mahi-Mahi and Ono – that’s your first bite of a Coconut’s Fish Cafe fish taco. Slight spiciness of the wasabi in the coleslaw is balanced with the coconut milk, crispy coleslaw topped with fresh tomatoes; a mango salsa balancing a red tomato-based salsa; melted cheese on top of crispy grilled tortillas – eat them with your hands, enjoy making a mess, and experience our famous fish tacos.

How to plan your trip to Maui using ‘The Guidebook’

Plan your trip to Maui using The Guidebook

How to plan your trip to Maui using ‘The Guidebook’.

So you’ve booked your tickets and you’ve booked our condo and now you want to plan your activities and your trip.  The sheer volume of information, things to see and do, and activity vendors is staggering. How do you narrow it all down to fit within your time frame?  You may want to start by viewing our ‘Maui Bucket List’ which contains some of the things we feel are ‘don’t miss’ things for Maui.  It by no means covers all the wonderful things to do while visiting Maui but it’s a good place to start.

Sandy beachOf course you will want to visit our world-class beaches to get your much needed dose of Vitamin Sea!  You can start by reading our ‘Maui Beaches’ guide. You’ll find a brief overview of some of the top beaches that we enjoy spending time at as well as some of the more unique beaches of Maui such as ‘Waianapanapa’, the Black Sand Beach of eastern Maui.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”   – Mark Twain

For a much more in depth source of information, I recommend to all of our guests that they pick up a copy of Maui Revealed The Ultimate Guidebook, a thorough travel guide.  Written by Andrew Doughty of Kapaa on the island of Kauai.  Andrew is author of a handful of Hawaiian Island guides. We leave a copy in our condo for your use but having a copy well in advance of your departure will help you to plan your days and schedule activities.

In it you’ll find detailed maps, sections on The Basics, Maui broken up into regions, beaches, activities, adventures and island dining.

Maui Revealed Smartphone AppIf Tech is your thing you’ll be happy to know that Maui Revealed is now available as a Smartphone app. You can get your copy on iTunes, buy for Android or purchase the app from Amazon.

Regardless of how you obtain your copy, there’s one thing that those of us who love Maui wish to share as it relates to your upcoming travels. And that’s RESPECT.  There is some controversy surrounding Doughty’s guidebooks – some say he encourages tourists to trespass on private property, some say their ‘secret’ island spots are no longer secret and others say that travelers don’t pay heed to his cautions and warnings.  Please don’t be that  tourist.   Show the island, it’s people and inhabitants Ho’ihi. Ho’ihi is the Hawiian word for Respect. Please, when you go to Maui, go with reverence and honor for the land, the people, the wildlife.

Moving on to activities, Doughty does a great job at covering the available activities and offering his opinion. There’s no way we could have visited and tried them all so we defer to the guide ourselves when looking into a new activity. We’ve tried quite a few activities and you’ll find our thoughts and recommendations on the Maui Bucket List page as well as in our House Guide located in our condo.

Of course we’re always here to help and answer questions from our guests so don’t hesitate to shoot us an email or click the ‘Contact Us’ button over there on the right. If we don’t know the answer we’ll sure help you find it!

When I think of Maui I think of limitless activities, exotic visions of beautiful beaches and mysterious offshore islands. I think of the incredible drive along the Hana Highway with its countless waterfalls and the less-travelled drive around West Maui. I think of good food and good mai tais. Of early morning treks up to the frigid 10,000-foot level of Haleakala for morning sunrises. Of great times, high adventures and contented smiles at the end of the day. If you know where to go and what to see on Maui, I promise you memories of a lifetime. – Andrew Doughty

The perfect Mahi Mahi Fish and Chips

fish and chips with beer

fish and chips with beer

The website is launched and live now and I can think of no better thing to talk about today than the the humble Mahi Mahi. When I travel to Maui, it’s one of the first meals I have. Mahi Mahi Fish & Chips – Maui style!  Paia Fish Market has long been a favorite restaurant of mine – from way back in the days when my soul-sister and I would fly over to Maui with our checked luggage (back when you could still check two bags per person with no charge) consisting of mostly camping gear and we’d camp out at Papalua Beach campground. But that’s a story for another day…

I think in the 25 years or so that I’ve been visiting Maui, that I’ve only ever ordered the Fish & Chips from Paia Fish Market. Never had a need to try any other dish on the menu. This one is perfection and I just don’t want to mess with perfection. Though every dish that passed me by on it’s way to another customer look entirely mouth watering! There’s just something about a cold beer and a delicious, fresh cooked piece of fish!

I consider myself a Fish & Chips connoisseur.  I’ve tried hundreds of fish & chips from England to New Zealand. Anytime we visit a coastal town and eat out, I try the fish and chips.  Some make theirs too doughy, you know the kind where it’s still raw tasting goo in the middle, some have more batter than fish, others hit the mark but they just never can match my beloved Paia Fish Market style.

Picture this (and get a bib if you must) an ice cold beer (I had the Pau Hana Pilsner* from Maui Brewing Co. on my last visit, excellent!), delectable coleslaw with just the right tartness level, perfect French fries and laying over that are four lightly breaded (no gooey beer batter here!) with just the right amount of herbs and spices, cooked just right FISH STICKS!  Inside is tender and juicy Mahi Mahi… hold on I have to go get my own bib – my mouth is watering just typing this… the flavor is enhanced by their perfect tartar sauce… mmm the tartar sauce adds just the perfect touch.

One serving can easily serve two people for a light dinner. I’ve never finished a whole meal of Fish & Chips in one setting. I always take leftovers home*.

fish and chips menuWhen we first started eating here, there was one restaurant, all the way over in Paia  (which isn’t really far) but not so inconveniently far that we wouldn’t hop in the rented beat-out Jeep with no top and head over to stuff ourselves. But now they boast three locations, one of which is just is 2.3 miles from our condo door! A mere 6 or 7 minutes to mouth-wateringly delicious food. I was so excited to see that they had opened up shop in Kihei! I can now get my fix without the long drive.

Paia Fish Market has a very casual environment. Order you meal & drinks at the window, get your ticket number and seat yourself to one of their picnic tables. Condiments, napkins and silverware are on the table, ready for you. When your piping hot Fish & Chips is ready for you (ok, maybe you tried something else on the menu) a server will bring your food to you. Casual or ‘Aloha’ ware attire is perfect for dining here. If you eat at the flagship restaurant in Paia there is some great surfing decor that is sadly missing at the Southside location.

Check out their flagship restaurant in Paia town on your way watch the wind surfers in Ho’okipa or to watch the surfers on the north shore. And if you’re up Lahaina way, grab a beer and some Fish & Chips (or be adventurous and try something else on the menu.)

* Tip! Pau Hana roughly translates as ‘Finished’ but it conveys as ‘The time after work. It is considered a time for relaxation, informal socializing with friends and family, and enjoyment.’

*Tip #2! Order extra fish sticks to take home. They run about $3 a piece and nothing beats cold fish sticks for breakfast! Don’t knock it till you try it!
