Polynesian Show
Polynesian Show

Take the family and go enjoy a Free Polynesian Show at the Shops at Wailea. This cultural performance will honor the many beautiful dances of Polynesia which includes Hawaiian hula, Tahitian and Samoan performances.

About Polynesian Dance (from Wikipedia)

Hula dancing is a complex art form, and there are many hand motions used to represent the words in a song or chant. For example, hand movements can signify aspects of nature, such as the swaying of a tree in the breeze or a wave in the ocean, or a feeling or emotion, such as fondness or yearning. Foot and hip movements often pull from a basic library of steps including the kaholo, kaʻo, kawelu, hela, ʻuwehe, and ʻami. There are other related dances (tamure, hura, ‘aparima, ‘ote’a, haka, kapa haka, poi, Fa’ataupati, Tau’olunga, and Lakalaka) that come from other Polynesian islands such as Tahiti, The Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga and Aotearoa (New Zealand); however, the hula is unique to the Hawaiian Islands.

Kohola Brewery Lahaina Pouring Their Heart Into Craft Brew

Kohola Brewery Lahaina
Kohola Brewery Lahaina Pouring Their Heart Into Craft Brew

Kohola Brewery Lahaina.  Last week we visited Maui Brewing Co for a look at what’s on tap in South Maui – today we’ll see what’s brewing up on the West side in Lahaina.

Kohola Brewery was born of the dreams of two couples, William and Susan Ramirez and Ian and Christine Elumba of Southern California. Home brewers taking their dreams to a new level!

The brewery was purchased from the former owners, Maui Brewing Co. after they expanded into South Maui. The fit was perfect!  After much remodeling and reconfiguring of equipment to meet their unique needs, the brewery opened their doors to the thirsty in December of 2016.

From Kohola’s web site;

Kohola Brewery is a local, independent craft brewery located in the heart of Lahaina, Maui. We believe that good beer makes everything else better. Beer is one of those special things in life that brings people together. We pour our hearts and passion into a pint and share our craft to those who enjoy our extraordinary brews.  We are your local brewery. We are Lahaina-brewed.

Kohola beers are now served in 80 draft handles in 50 bars, restaurants and resorts on Maui, as well as several places in Oahu and Kauai.

All of our Beers are brewed and packaged locally here in Lahaina, Maui. Flights of 4, 6 and 8 are available. Happy Hour is 4-9PM Daily

For the uninitiated, Kohola means Whale in the Hawaiian language and is represented in their unique and simple logo.

Year Round Beers

Kohola Brewery Lahaina

Kohola Brewery Lahaina

Let’s take a look at what’s on tap!   Year Round Beers-

Talk Story Pale Ale – American, 5.1% ABV, A smooth, grainy, and slightly bready, classic Pale Ale. This flavor matches beautifully with the citrus, tangerine flavors and aromas of Chinook, Mosaic, Mandarina Bavaria and Citra hops. Locals in Hawaii love to chat — or what we say talk story. This is what this beer truly represents, good times with friends and Ohana. Malt: 2-Row, Vienna Hops: Citra, Chinook, Mandarina Bavaria, Mosaic Yeast: House Ale.

Lokahi Pilsner Pilsner – German, 5.5% ABV, Our best-selling beer, a German Style Pilsner, presents a slightly grainy, pilsner malt sweetness to the nose and mouth. Its crisp hop bitterness from Tettnang hops is accentuated by a moderate sulfate rich water profile, this pale-yellow lager is conditioned for 6-8 weeks to give it a perfect flavor and aroma profile to compliment the beautiful island of Maui! Lokahi is the Hawaiian word for “in unity, harmony, and peace”. Malt: Pilsner Hops: Tettnang, Hallertau Magnum Yeast: Bohemian Lager.

Red Sand Red Ale – American Amber / Red, 5.5% ABV, Red Sand Ale is an American-style Red Ale that is medium bodied with bready, malty flavors and aromas. It has hop aromas of earth and spice from the late kettle Fuggle additions. This beer is named after the “pocket” Red Sand beach in Maui. As red ales are not common to the islands of Hawaii, this is truly a “pocket” style in paradise. Malt: 2-Row, CaraAmber, Crystal 60, Black, Vienna Hops: CTZ (Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus), UK Fuggle Yeast: House Ale

Kohola Brewery Lahaina

The brewery has a good sized handful of Limited Release beer on tap as well, all with monikers as unique as their flavor profiles;  Shaka Island (IPA), Pineapple Lokahi  (Pilsner), Lilikoi Saison (Lilikoi = Passionfruit), Mean Bean Coffee Stout, Mr. Ukulele (IPA), Hop Aloha (IPA), Sweet Home Lahaina (Belgian Tripel) and Coconut Hula Stout!
Kohola Brewery Lahaina

At the moment the brewery isn’t offering up food but Ono Tacos is their neighbor and Kohola encourages folks to grab a bite at the food truck (well really food trailer) and carry it on over. Kohola offers fun games such as cards, Jenga, GIANT Jenga and more as well as complementary WIFI, and kamaaina specials for residents.

Kapalua Golf – The Plantation Course

Kapalua Golf The Plantation Course
Kapalua Golf – The Plantation Course

I’ll admit that it’s been a while since I’ve swung a club however there’s no arguing that I’d love to give this course a try. Golfing in Maui is bar none and Kapalua Golf The Plantation Course is no exception.

Kapalua Resort’s championship mountain links course characteristics: large-scale terrain features; deep valleys; expansive greens and fairways.

Check out their live web cam!

Kapalua Golf The Plantation Course

Consistently ranked as the #1 golf course in Hawaii, playing The Plantation Course is sure to be on every golfer’s bucket list. Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the course was designed on a grand scale in keeping with its location on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains and offers dramatic ocean views from virtually every hole. Its lengthy 7,411 yard par 73 layout challenges the pros but it’s wide fairways and generous greens make it very playable for the average golfer. With dramatic elevation changes, this course offers plenty of downhill tee shots.

You’ll feel like one of the pros when – with the aid of the aggressive slope of the 18th fairway – you will enjoy hitting one of the longest drives of your life.
The Plantation Course is the site of the PGA TOUR’s Sentry Tournament of Champions each January featuring an elite field of previous year’s PGA TOUR winners. The field has included golf greats such as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Justin Leonard, Ernie Els, Davis Love III and many more. The course record is set at 62 and tied between K.J. Choi (2003), Graeme McDowell (2011), Chris Kirk (2015) and Jason Day (2015)

Recognized as the best golf course in Hawaii for ten consecutive years by Golfweek, the Plantation Course is home to the PGA TOUR’s Tournament of Champions. The Bay Course has hosted over 20 professional tournaments – the most of any neighbor island course – and features the only hole to play over the ocean on Maui.

It’s Whale Season On Maui – Close Encounters

It's Whale Season On Maui Close Encounters
It’s Whale Season On Maui – Close Encounters!

The Humpback Whales are back for their annual pilgrimage to the shallow waters off the coast of Maui! Maui is lucky enough to host these incredible mammals from approximately November to May but with peak whale season happening in February.

Look what happens when the tables are turned and the whales come to see YOU!  Close Encounter of the most Magnificent Kind!

What an incredible encounter! BUT let’s all remember to respect the marine life of Hawaii and keep in mind that Federal Laws protect many species in the Hawaiian Islands (more info on that below.)

Interested in having a close encounter with a Humpback whale? Here’s a list of tour companies that we like.

Captain Steve’s

We’ve taken numerous tours with Captain Steve’s and are always impressed. Small Zodiac style boats, limited number of guests, intimate feel, knowledgeable staff. Book your trip early due to popularity and limited availability.

http://captainsteves.com/up-close-whale-watching-tours/

It's Whale Season On Maui Close Encounters

Pride Of Maui Tours

Another great option is Pride of Maui. Not better, not worse, just different and each of us has our taste in how we enjoy activities. With POM you will lfind larger boats, more people, more amenities, more child oriented (slide, more room to walk around boat), longer trip. Equally fun as the smaller boats of Captain Steve’s.

It's Whale Season On Maui Close Encounters

Laws and Information about Whale Protection

Pursuit and feeding of marine mammals is prohibited by Federal law.

• Remain at least 100 yards from humpback whales, and at least 50 yards from other marine mammals (dolphins, other whale species, and Hawaiian monk seals). Do not swim with wild spinner dolphins.

• Observe turtles from a distance.

• Bring binoculars along on viewing excursions to assure a good view from the recommended viewing distances.

• Do not attempt to touch, ride, or feed turtles.

• Limit your time observing an animal to 1/2 hour.

• Marine mammals and sea turtles should not be encircled or trapped between boats or shore.
If approached by a marine mammal or turtle while on a boat, put the engine in neutral and allow the animal to pass. Boat movement should be from the rear of the animal.

By being aware of the steps to responsible marine mammal and sea turtle viewing, you can help reduce the potential to inadvertently harm these animals or violate Federal or state law. Together, we can ensure marine wildlife viewing will be as rewarding as it is today for many generations to come.

Notify proper authorities if you encounter sick or stranded animals. Keep your distance; distressed wild animals can be dangerous and should only be handled by trained professionals.

It's Whale Season On Maui Close Encounters

Laws and Marine Mammal Viewing
All whales, dolphins and seals are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 (MMPA). Humpback whales, sperm whales, monk seals and sea turtles are further protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) and under Hawaii State Law. The National Marine Sanctuaries Act (NMSA) provides additional protections for humpback whales and their habitat.

How to plan your trip to Maui using ‘The Guidebook’

Plan your trip to Maui using The Guidebook

How to plan your trip to Maui using ‘The Guidebook’.

So you’ve booked your tickets and you’ve booked our condo and now you want to plan your activities and your trip.  The sheer volume of information, things to see and do, and activity vendors is staggering. How do you narrow it all down to fit within your time frame?  You may want to start by viewing our ‘Maui Bucket List’ which contains some of the things we feel are ‘don’t miss’ things for Maui.  It by no means covers all the wonderful things to do while visiting Maui but it’s a good place to start.

Sandy beachOf course you will want to visit our world-class beaches to get your much needed dose of Vitamin Sea!  You can start by reading our ‘Maui Beaches’ guide. You’ll find a brief overview of some of the top beaches that we enjoy spending time at as well as some of the more unique beaches of Maui such as ‘Waianapanapa’, the Black Sand Beach of eastern Maui.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”   – Mark Twain

Maui Revealed The Ulitimage GuidebookFor a much more in depth source of information, I recommend to all of our guests that they pick up a copy of Maui Revealed The Ultimate Guidebook, a thorough travel guide.  Written by Andrew Doughty of Kapaa on the island of Kauai.  Andrew is author of a handful of Hawaiian Island guides. We leave a copy in our condo for your use but having a copy well in advance of your departure will help you to plan your days and schedule activities.

In it you’ll find detailed maps, sections on The Basics, Maui broken up into regions, beaches, activities, adventures and island dining.

Maui Revealed Smartphone AppIf Tech is your thing you’ll be happy to know that Maui Revealed is now available as a Smartphone app. You can get your copy on iTunes, buy for Android or purchase the app from Amazon.

Regardless of how you obtain your copy, there’s one thing that those of us who love Maui wish to share as it relates to your upcoming travels. And that’s RESPECT.  There is some controversy surrounding Doughty’s guidebooks – some say he encourages tourists to trespass on private property, some say their ‘secret’ island spots are no longer secret and others say that travelers don’t pay heed to his cautions and warnings.  Please don’t be that  tourist.   Show the island, it’s people and inhabitants Ho’ihi. Ho’ihi is the Hawiian word for Respect. Please, when you go to Maui, go with reverence and honor for the land, the people, the wildlife.

Moving on to activities, Doughty does a great job at covering the available activities and offering his opinion. There’s no way we could have visited and tried them all so we defer to the guide ourselves when looking into a new activity. We’ve tried quite a few activities and you’ll find our thoughts and recommendations on the Maui Bucket List page as well as in our House Guide located in our condo.

Of course we’re always here to help and answer questions from our guests so don’t hesitate to shoot us an email or click the ‘Contact Us’ button over there on the right. If we don’t know the answer we’ll sure help you find it!

When I think of Maui I think of limitless activities, exotic visions of beautiful beaches and mysterious offshore islands. I think of the incredible drive along the Hana Highway with its countless waterfalls and the less-travelled drive around West Maui. I think of good food and good mai tais. Of early morning treks up to the frigid 10,000-foot level of Haleakala for morning sunrises. Of great times, high adventures and contented smiles at the end of the day. If you know where to go and what to see on Maui, I promise you memories of a lifetime. – Andrew Doughty
