The Festival of Colors is the modern American version of a traditional Holi Festival, celebrated every spring in India. It is a celebration of the victory of good over evil and of the arrival of spring and harvests to come. In the spirit of inclusion, celebrating the beauty of diversity and the uniqueness of each and every child, this spectacular and colorful explosion the Color Festival Hawaii event will feature energetic, nonstop, live music for dancing from DJ Boomshot, Eric Gilliom and Band, Shea Butter & The Cream, and Yum Yum Beast.

Also enjoy special guest performances from singers, actors, and stage celebrities, Teal Wicks and Matt Doyle, all leading up to moment the entire audience participates in the throwing of colors! Enjoy some of Maui’s best food trucks and sweet treats as well.

Want to know what Holi Festival’s might look like on Maui?

From the Color Festival web site:

“Color festivals originally began in India with the Holi Festival.  Color Festivals have since spread around the world and are also known as Festivals of Color or the Festivals of Love, signifying the arrival of spring and end of winter, the victory of good over evil, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forgive, repair and restore relationships. (Some might also find this correlates with the meaning and message of Easter.) Like the coloring of Easter Eggs, a Color Festival is an artistic, creative and visual expression of colors where people throw colors into the air until everyone is thoroughly shaded in beautiful and vibrant colors. Combined with music and dancing it is a symbol of life, love and happiness.

The Color Festival Hawaii is an engaging family-friendly gathering and a place for children to come and play and participate. The message behind a color festival is “inclusion,” that we are all the same under one rainbow, living and celebrating life together.”

Tickets: $20 (includes 1 color pak); $25 (includes 3 color paks); $15 keiki age 6-16 (includes 1 color pak); FREE for keiki up to 5 years (plus applicable fees)

Jake Shimabukuro Ukulele Virtuoso In Concert Maui Arts & Cultural Center

Jake Shimabukuro Ukulele Virtuoso
Jake Shimabukuro Ukulele Virtuoso In Concert at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center

Maui is in for a treat with Jake Shimabukuro Ukulele Virtuoso In Concert at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Renowned for his super-fast and complex finger work, ‘ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro has redefined the meaning of music that comes from that instrument. There is no doubt that Jake embodies the heart and soul of ‘ukulele music, as no one else can wring the emotion, beauty, meaning and thrills out of four strings like he can!

Have a listen to Jake’s version of George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ that went viral.

Starting his career in Hawai’i, Jake took his inspiration from some of the islands’ great ‘uke players, but he quickly expanded his scope from there, drawing influences from across the musical spectrum. In 2001, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist. It was the start of what would become a deep catalog of solo albums, noted for their dazzling fretwork, ambitious repertoire, and wistful melodicism.

In 2005, Shimabukuro became an international phenomenon when a video of him performing the George Harrison song, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” went viral on YouTube. By adapting a guitar hero’s anthem for the ukulele, Jake made a significant statement: the ukulele, with its humble four strings and modest two-octave range, is an instrument limited only by the imagination and creativity of the person playing it.

Jake is now a worldwide phenomenon: he’s been declared a musical “hero” by Rolling Stone, has collaborated with and won accolades from diverse stars in the music world, and wowed audiences on world tours and TV.

For more info visit Jake’s  website.

Ms. Hill earned two Grammy awards (Best Rap Album and Best R&B Performance by a duo or group) in 1996 before releasing her self-written and self-produced iconic solo album, “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill,” which topped Billboard charts the moment it came out. She remains an influential artistic force.
